On 13 February 2009 in Jakarta, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan H.E. Mr. V.Norov met with the Secretary-General Association of Southeast Asian Nations H.E. D-r Surin Pitsuwan.
During the meeting, Dr. S.Pitsuwan noted: «We welcome the close cooperation with Uzbekistan, which has expressed interest in becoming more active partner of ASEAN in the international arena». He named a landmark moment that the first representative government structures in Central Asia, visited the ASEAN Secretariat, was the head of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry. According to him, «the visit demonstrates the strong desire of Uzbekistan to develop new forms of mutually beneficial cooperation with countries in Southeast Asia in all areas of mutual interests».
The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation in security and combating terrorism, exchange of scientific exchange, including the possibility of organizing a visit of the Muslim scholars of the ASEAN countries to the Islamic centers in Uzbekistan.
