Meeting at the MFA of Indonesia
On 12 February 2009 in Jakarta, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan H.E. Mr. V.Norov met with his counterpart Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Mr. Hassan Wirajuda.
At the meeting in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Head of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry H.E. Mr. H.Wirajuda said that Indonesia considers Uzbekistan as a key partner in Central Asia, has enormous political, trade-
economic, investment and human potential. «Your country, with high economic potential, as well as rich cultural and historical heritage, serves as an important player in regional and international levels», he added.
In turn, the head of the MFA of Uzbekistan noted that Indonesia is one of the most important economic partners of Uzbekistan in Southeast Asia. Uzbekistan is interested in expanding the political, trade and economic, cultural and humanitarian ties with Indonesia – the biggest Muslim State in the world. In Uzbekistan set up and operate number of joint Uzbek-Indonesian businesses.
The parties also discussed issues of bilateral cooperation and problems of regional and international issues, interaction within international organizations and ways to enhance ties between the two countries in other areas.
Meeting at the Parliament of Indonesia
13 February 2009 in Jakarta Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan H.E. Mr. Vladimir Norov met with H.E. Mr. Agung Laksono, the Speaker of House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia
H.E. Mr. A.Laksono positively evaluated the reforms conducted in Uzbekistan to liberalize judicial-legal system, the abolition of the death penalty, the introduction of «Habeas corpus» 1 January 2008, the functioning of a bicameral parliament.
House Speaker H.E. Mr. Agung Laksono with special warmth spoke about his visit to Uzbekistan in December 2007, emphasizing friendliness and openness of the Uzbek people. He noted that, «the hospitality of uzbek people knows no bounds, and frankly, in Uzbekistan, I felt as in Indonesia, probably because of the similarities of cultures and a common faith».
He noted that in recent years the role and place Central Asian region is constantly increasing, as Uzbekistan, bordering with all countries in the region, its «heart», is the focus of world powers.
Meeting at the ASEAN Secretariat
On 13 February 2009 in Jakarta, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan H.E. Mr. V.Norov met with the Secretary-General Association of Southeast Asian Nations H.E. D-r Surin Pitsuwan. During the meeting, Dr. S.Pitsuwan noted: «We welcome the close cooperation with Uzbekistan, which has expressed interest in becoming more active partner of ASEAN in the international arena». He named a landmark moment that the first representative government structures in Central Asia, visited the ASEAN Secretariat, was the head of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry. According to him, «the visit demonstrates the strong desire of Uzbekistan to develop new forms of mutually beneficial cooperation with countries in Southeast Asia in all areas of mutual interests».
The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation in security and combating terrorism, exchange of scientific exchange, including the possibility of organizing a visit of the Muslim scholars of the ASEAN countries to the Islamic centers in Uzbekistan.
